Comment: Not a question but want the BOE to know that many parents are going to be hesitant to send their children to school in August. We cannot pretend this is behind us and go back to crowded classrooms and hallways as we once did. Please consider alternate options such as smaller classes, alternating school days for students and other ideas to limit exposure to other students. We will have no additional means of protection when school is supposed to resume and no students life is worth risking.

    Response:

The District will adhere to ALL CDC guidance when the time comes for school to begin. Everything is on the table including, but not limited to, a delayed start and alternating days. The District is working on a safety plan for the Fall. The plan will be shared with all stakeholders before school begins.

Your child's safety and well-being are, ultimately, your responsibility. You should make decisions that you believe are in their best interest. It is not the government's role to tell you how to raise your child. The School District will always work with you to support your decisions within the parameters of the law.

  • Can funds for virtual classes be allocated, especially in the event of a reoccurring virus? ESPLOST?

    Posted by:

District funding for technology is used to maintain servers, switches, and WIFI points. Additionally, the Tech Department's annual budget supports software licenses and devices. The barrier to digital learning is not the school system’s infrastructure. It is the lack of connectivity and home devices.  Could ESPLOST funds be used to provide additional devices and perhaps mobile WIFI or hotspots? Yes, but this would delay or neglect building maintenance and renovation needs.  Thtricky part is implementation. It's not like flipping a switch. To what degree are teachers using the current technology we have? How would this transfer to a distance learning environment? What training is needed to offer rich learning experiences? What age-appropriate resources are needed to enrich the distance learning experience? How do we connect with students without internet, without devices, and without support? These are some of the wonderings we have, and this will take not only additional funding but training and transformation of daily classroom instruction. If it can't be done within the building consistently and effectively, it is doomed to fail virtually.

  • What about PCPS Square 1 Art?

    Posted by:

Mrs. Pitts, PCPS art teacher, only had time to finish Square 1 Art projects with less than half of our students. Our plan is to offer second graders an opportunity during the summer to come in and finish their art project if they have not finished. Kindergarten and first graders will finish in August. As soon as social distancing requirements have been lifted, we will communicate a more detailed plan.

  • Why do ZHS and PCAP not have continuity with PCHS and PCMS?

    Posted by:

ZHS and PCAP are non-traditional schools that utilize an online learning platform called Edgenuity.  The online platform allows students to work at their own pace. ZHS and PCAP instruction is not significantly disrupted; thus, they continue to make progress and earn credits. Because each student is different and has a unique learning/graduation plan, should you have further questions, please feel free to direct them to wattss@pike.k12.ga.us .

  • How will curriculum be adjusted for the 2020-21 school year to catch up students?

    Posted by:

K-5We will begin the 2020-2021 school year by assessing students to determine their learning needs. Once the instructional needs are identified, teachers will identify which skills and standards must be taught. As always, instruction will be differentiated so that all student learning needs are met.

6-8: During the first month of school, teachers in core content areas will include key standards that were not taught the previous year. As always, we will use benchmark assessments to determine where our students are in basic reading and math skills and remediate them as needed to get to grade-level equivalency.

9-12: The units of instruction for the beginning of the year for all contents will be adjusted to compensate for curriculum not covered and standards not met, as well as essential skills that need support in order to succeed in the next level.

  • If my child was recommended for gifted testing this school year, when will that be done?

    Posted by:

It is possible to do gifted testing over the summer as long as it is deemed safe for our teachers and students. Because some components of testing require outside companies to score the test, testing results may be delayed. If testing is not possible during the summer, gifted testing will resume as soon as we return to school.
